BRUSSELS SENDS THE BILL

  • Daimler Truck could owe roughly €1 billion ($1.2 billion) in EU fines if it misses its 2030 emissions target, CEO Karin Rådström said, per Automotive News Europe.

  • The penalty scales at about €120 million for every percentage point Daimler falls short, per Automotive News Europe.

  • Rådström said the penalties "aren't fair," per Transport Topics, while conceding that the world's biggest truckmaker, on its current trajectory, expects to land 10 to 15 percent short of the target, per Automotive News Europe.

  • She says Daimler has "done its homework" developing emission-free truck models, per Transport Topics, the same models the EU is counting on to hit the target Daimler is now flagging it can't reach.

  • The €1 billion figure is Daimler's own estimate, not a number Brussels has issued, per Automotive News Europe.

A CEO who calculates her own fine before the regulator does isn't complaining about unfairness in the abstract. She's telling investors the zero-emission trucks aren't moving fast enough to dodge the bill Daimler built them to avoid.
