  • For the first time in its 59-year history, Mercedes-AMG has developed a full-size SUV entirely in-house, per Mercedes-Benz. The electric AMG GT SUV is the second model on the AMG.EA platform after the GT 4-Door Coupe, and it reaches U.S. dealers next summer as a 2028 model, per Automotive News.

  • There are three versions. The GT 63 uses three axial-flux motors for 1,153 hp and 1,475 lb-ft, the GT 55 uses the same three motors for 805 hp, and the GT 53 uses two conventional motors and a two-speed rear transmission for 536 hp, per InsideEVs. The GT 53 weighs almost 400 pounds less than the other two, per Car and Driver.

  • The GT 55 and GT 63 carry 128 kWh of usable battery, against 106 kWh in the sedan, and charge at up to 710 kW, which Mercedes says takes them from 10% to 80% in 12 minutes. Their range is 385 to 435 miles on the European WLTP cycle; U.S. EPA figures will be lower, per InsideEVs.

  • The GT 63 weighs 5,941 pounds, per Edmunds. The V8 is simulated: the GT 55 and GT 63 mimic a V8 with sound, fake gear changes and seat vibrations, and the GT 53 pipes in a six-cylinder, per InsideEVs.

  • It is aimed at the electric Porsche Cayenne. Edmunds data shows 39% of Porsche shoppers cross-shopped a Mercedes in September, and Texas Mercedes dealer Charlie Hicks called it a "high-performance SUV first that happens to be electric," per Automotive News, which also reports that some dealers worry about stretching the AMG badge too far downmarket.

  • U.S. pricing is not out. In Germany the GT 53 SUV opens for orders on Oct. 20 at 113,050 euros, per Mercedes-Benz, while the GT 53 version of the 4-Door Coupe starts at 115,430 euros there, per InsideEVs.

AMG put its most advanced hardware into the shape Mercedes sells most: the GLE is the brand's No. 1 seller in the U.S., per Automotive News. The German prices put the bigger SUV about 2,400 euros below the sedan at the entry level. Car and Driver expects the U.S. GT 53 to start around $130,000 and the GT 55 and GT 63 to cost more than their sedan versions, and Edmunds expects the GT 63 could pass $200,000. VinFast-Affiliated Green SM Put 500 VinFast EVs on Los Angeles Streets: Green SM, a Vietnamese ride-hailing company affiliated with VinFast, launched its all-electric taxi service in Los Angeles on Oct. 13, per Autoblog. The fleet is 500 VinFast VF8s and it is Green SM's first U.S. operation, per Car and Driver. Unlike Uber and Lyft it owns the cars and employs 500 full-time drivers it trained, and riders can book through an app, call a hotline or hail one on the street. The fleet alone outnumbers VinFast's U.S. registrations for the first seven months of the year: Automotive News reported only 389 from January to July, per Car and Driver. VinFast announced the launch itself, per Just Auto. #market

A Democratic Congress Would Get a Say on Tariffs and the USMCA Review, but Not a Veto: Election Day is Nov. 3, and Polymarket gave Democrats a 63% chance of winning both chambers as of Oct. 14, per Automotive News. Control would let them hold hearings on U.S. auto tariffs and on the EPA and Department of Transportation, and if the courts narrow the tariffs, "a Democratic Congress is unlikely to provide Trump with replacement authorities," TD Cowen's Chris Krueger wrote. President Trump would keep his veto power, so any legislation Democrats propose on the USMCA review would be subject to it. The U.S. decided in July not to extend the USMCA in its current form, and the three countries meet next July to decide whether to extend it or let it expire in 2036. California's next governor will also shape whether the 2035 EV sales rule survives if the state wins its court challenge; states following that rule made up about 34% of new light-vehicle sales by a 2024 Sierra Club estimate. #analyst

Porsche's New Design Chief Splits the Lineup Into Halo, Plus and Core: Tobias Sühlmann, who joined in February, told Car and Driver that Porsche will sort its cars into "Halo" supercars like the Mission S, "Plus" models like the Cayenne, Macan and Panamera, and "Core" cars with the 911 at the center. He also set design cues drawn from the 911 and the 356 that will run across all three: "torpedo" front fenders, a "flyline" fastback roof, a clean wraparound body line and a muscular rear.

Fiat's 25-MPH Topolino Makes TIME's Best Inventions of 2026: The electric quadricycle was listed in the Design category, per Autoblog. It led Europe's electric quadricycle segment in 2025, still leads it this year and has been No. 1 in France since July. In the U.S., it went on sale in July at $13,995 as a 19-mph low-speed vehicle, per our U.S. launch coverage.

Mazda Cut the CX-5's Wire-Harness Variants by About 80%: Mazda and supplier Yazaki redesigned the harnesses so more of the work can be automated, with the parts made near Mazda's Japanese plants, where U.S.-bound CX-5s are built, per Autoblog. U.S. CX-5 sales rose 37.8% to 11,345 in September.

VW Will Cap 22,524 ID.4s at 80% Charge Around Oct. 27 Unless Owners Opt Out by Oct. 21: The recall covers 2023 to 2026 ID.4s built in Chattanooga with SK battery cells from Georgia, and the cause of the fire risk is still unknown, per InsideEVs. A myVW app notice tells owners the 80% limit will be applied "on or about October 27, 2026" unless they decline by Oct. 21; it is an interim measure, not the fix. VW believes about 0.1% of the recalled cars have the defect.

Ram Recalls 265,512 ProMaster Vans Whose Power Steering Can Cut Out: Water can corrode the electric power steering wiring on 2022 to 2026 ProMaster vans and 2024 to 2026 ProMaster EVs, and "there is no identified warning before the failure," per MotorBiscuit, citing the NHTSA filing. FCA estimates 7.7% of the vans have the defect and knows of one possibly related crash with no injuries; owner letters go out from Nov. 17.

Lexus Is Sending 35,000 Cars Meant for China and the Middle East to U.S. Dealers Who Have 16 Days of Supply: Lexus has secured roughly 35,000 vehicles originally destined for softening overseas markets, mainly China and the Middle East, for its 246 U.S. dealers, with most arriving in the fourth quarter and the first quarter of 2027, per Automotive News. Lexus ended September with 16 days' supply.

Ford's Certified Used Sales Jumped 44% and Took the Quarterly Lead for the First Time: Ford sold 130,112 certified pre-owned vehicles in the third quarter, up 44% and ahead of volume leader Toyota for the first time, while industrywide CPO sales fell 2.5% through August, per Automotive News. Ford's count includes other brands' vehicles, but it still led the quarter without them. It is on pace for a record 450,000 this year and wants "well over 500,000" and the top spot in 2027, said Rob Kaffl, Ford's director of U.S. sales and dealer relations. The push fills a gap: Ford's new-vehicle sales fell 9% through September, partly because of an F-150 shortage after 2025 fires at an aluminum supplier.

Mercedes Says the Smaller G-Class Arrives in Less Than 24 Months, Built in Hungary: CEO Ola Källenius told Bloomberg the car is coming "sooner than you think" and "less than 24 months from now," per Autoblog, nearly five years after Mercedes announced it in 2023. It was planned as electric-only and will now also come as a hybrid, which U.S. dealers pushed for, and it will be built in Kecskemét, Hungary, not at Magna Steyr in Graz, where the G-Class is made. Land Rover's smaller Defender Sport is reportedly due as soon as 2027. The G-Class starts at $153,900 in the U.S.
