ONE-WAY TICKET
Electrek reported that the Yangwang U9 Xtreme reached 503.17 km/h (312.66 mph) on a closed 10 km section of Abu Dhabi's E11 highway, which left the team a 7 km straight. The FIA and Guinness World Records both recognized the run as the first by a production car past 500 km/h.
It took two days. Driver Marc Basseng topped out at 490 km/h on Oct. 31, then engineers worked overnight on the rear wing, rebound damping, tire pressures and battery and motor temperatures, and the second run on Nov. 1 delivered the number, per Motor1.
That was two days before Tuesday's item on the U9 Xtreme crash video reported BYD was preparing to try for 500 km/h this month. BYD did not announce the record until this week.
The asterisk is the direction. Both Guinness titles are for a "single direction" run, and production-car records have traditionally averaged two runs in opposite directions to cancel out wind and grade. That is how Koenigsegg's Agera RS set 447.19 km/h in 2017, and Bugatti itself said its 490 km/h one-way run in 2019 was not an official record, per Electrek. The car also ran on bespoke semi-slick tires, and it is not clear whether customer cars get them.
The car beat its own mark: 496.22 km/h (308 mph), set at Germany's Papenburg track in September 2025, which had already displaced the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+'s 490.48 km/h. Four motors give it 2,220 kW, nearly 3,000 hp, from LFP Blade battery cells, the chemistry BYD uses in its cheapest city cars.
Only 30 will be built, at around $3 million each, and BYD does not sell passenger cars in the U.S.
Guinness's single-direction wording leaves the two-way record where it was. Koenigsegg says its Jesko Absolut can theoretically do a two-way 500 km/h run, but it has never attempted one. Read Electrek's full story.

"Sometimes if you are too early, then you see that you have to work on what the customer really wants," CTO Jörg Burzer told Road & Track. Mercedes is putting its effort into a Level 2 system that can change lanes, make turns and respond to traffic lights, with the driver still responsible, and plans to eventually skip Level 3 for Level 4, per Motor1. #analyst

Georgia is giving Audi the 1,500-acre site, $458 million in tax incentives and more than $120 million in grants, plus another $430 million for roads, water, utilities and workforce training. Audi declined to comment. The first phase, due in the early 2030s, is set to build 200,000 SUVs a year, and Audi has sought to cut the 15% tariff it pays on EU imports to 7.5%, but the Commerce Department was expected to agree to about 10%, per Just Auto. Tariff relief has reportedly been promised to Audi for the Georgia plant, and would require starting a U.S. plant by the end of next year. #market

Mercedes Has Reportedly Pushed U.S. GLC Production Back to 2030, Keeping Its Best-Selling Import Under Tariffs: Alabama assembly moves from November 2027 to May 2030, according to two people familiar with the plans, per Automotive News. Mercedes declined to comment. The GLC pays a 15% tariff coming from Germany, and its nearly 54,000 U.S. sales through September are close to a quarter of Mercedes' volume there, excluding vans. AutoForecast's Sam Fiorani says retooling for half a life cycle "doesn't make a lot of sense financially," so the plant would wait for the next generation.
