AUDI'S FIRST U.S. ADDRESS
Audi plans to invest about $4 billion in its first U.S. production site, at the Middle Georgia Mega Site, with about 4,500 jobs and capacity for up to 200,000 vehicles a year. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with production starting in the early 2030s, per Audi.
Audi has said only that it will build "premium SUVs tailored to North American customers." A U.S. official told Reuters the plant is expected to build the Q7, Q8 and Q9, and that Audi also plans to build 25,000 vehicles a year at the $2 billion Scout Motors plant under construction in South Carolina, per Automotive News, citing Reuters.
Every Audi sold in the U.S. is imported from Europe or Mexico. U.S. tariffs cost the Volkswagen Group $4 billion in 2025, including a $1.4 billion hit for Audi, per the same report, and Audi's U.S. sales fell 15% to 39,751 in the third quarter, its fourth straight quarterly decline, per Automotive News.
President Trump announced the plant at a rally in Perry, Georgia, on Saturday, alongside Audi CEO Gernot Döllner, who said "we are planning to bring our biggest and most premium SUVs and produce them here," per Automotive News. Neither Audi nor Georgia has said what incentives the state is offering, per MotorBiscuit.
The plan still needs approval from VW Group's supervisory board, including its labor representatives. VW's works council said Sunday that "there are several open questions yet to be answered internally," and Audi's Neckarsulm plant in Germany is one of those facing possible closure after 2030, per Automotive News.
The plant does nothing for Audi's tariff bill before the 2030s. Until Georgia opens, at least five years from now, the new Q7 and Q9 will be shipped from Audi's plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, per Motor1. BMW and Mercedes-Benz have had major plants in the American South for decades, which CarBuzz argues is a large part of why they absorbed the tariffs better than Audi did. Motor1 also asks why VW is building a second plant a state away from Scout's rather than expanding that one, which is sized for 200,000 vehicles a year. Read Automotive News' full story.

NHTSA Would Let Self-Driving Cars Show Cyan Lights When Nobody Is Driving: A draft rule released Friday would let automated vehicles carry cyan marker lamps that switch on only while the car is driving itself and switch off when a driver is expected to watch the road, per Electrek. The lamps would be optional, not required. Mercedes proposed the color alongside its Level 3 Drive Pilot system and trialed the lights in California, per the same report. China's version, proposed days earlier, uses turquoise, is also optional on Level 3 and higher systems, and would take effect Jan. 1, 2028, per CnEVPost. #news
Europe's Tariffs on Chinese EVs Don't Cover Used Ones, and One Exporter Says Its Sales Are Up 280%: China EV Marketplace, which ships cars from China to buyers in Europe, says its used-car sales to EU customers rose 280% from a year earlier to 7,900 through September, per Electrek, citing CarNewsChina. "Pre-owned cars are exempt from the additional BEV tariffs and from the new hybrid (PHEV) quota. That is why we are making pre-owned vehicles the main focus of our European business," COO Jakub Geršl said. The company says it regularly finds cars with about 6,000 km (3,700 miles) on them priced 40% below their original Chinese list price. The figures are the company's own, and 7,900 cars is small next to Europe's market, but it is a route around rules written for new cars. #market
Ford Cut GM's Full-Size Pickup Lead by a Third in the Third Quarter: GM sold 233,229 Silverado and Sierra pickups in the quarter to Ford's 204,007 F-Series, a gap of 29,222 trucks, down from 44,524 in the first quarter and 44,503 in the second, per Autoblog. That is 15,281 fewer than in the second quarter, or 34% of the lead gone in a single quarter. The Sierra did most of the slipping, at 86,590 sales, 9% fewer than in the second quarter, while the Silverado rose 4.4% from a year earlier to 144,984. Ford's Super Duty output reached 110,275, its highest quarter in 19 years, and F-Series production has recovered from last year's fire at Novelis' aluminum plant. GM's redesigned Silverado and Sierra reach dealers before the end of the year, which may have some buyers waiting. #analyst
