A record 20 of the roughly 60 automaker brands at the Paris show, which opens Monday, are Chinese, double the 10 at the 2024 show, per Carscoops citing Reuters, and BMW opted not to attend.
AlixPartners says Chinese automakers can build an EV for $11,000 less per unit than European rivals, a gap tariffs alone cannot close, per Automotive News.
European automakers' EBITDA margins fell to 6.9% in 2025 from 13.2% in 2021, and they take up to 60 months to launch a model against 24 for Chinese rivals, AlixPartners says, per Automotive News.
Chinese brands held nearly 12% of the European market in August, about double a year earlier, per Automotive News Europe citing Dataforce, and Leapmotor alone sold 56,005 cars in Europe in the first half, up 558%, per Autocar citing ACEA.
Europe's answer is small and cheap: Autocar says the show centers on EVs priced well under £20,000, led by Citroën's revived 2CV, shown Sunday as a concept that previews a European-built car targeted at about €15,000 by 2028, per InsideEVs.
The Audi A2 e-tron, one of the show's debuts, is already on sale in the UK from £32,200, per electrive.
The Paris show opens Monday with 20 Chinese brands. Europe's cheap answer, Citroën's 2CV, is a concept with a production car targeted for 2028.
