SUBARU GOES IT ALONE
Subaru showed its next-generation EV prototype to reporters for the first time on Oct. 18 at its test course north of Tokyo, per Automotive News. It rides on a new dedicated EV platform with a new battery, new motors and a new control unit, all developed in roughly half the usual time as Subaru tries to match the pace of Chinese competitors.
Every EV Subaru sells today was developed with Toyota, its biggest shareholder: the Solterra, Trailseeker, Uncharted and Getaway. Engineering chief Takatomo Watamori said Subaru must develop its own EVs to keep a brand identity built on all-wheel drive and safety, per Automotive News.
The test car is the new platform under an Outback body, with a longer wheelbase than the Outback's, per Automotive News. A 150-kW front motor and a 230-kW rear motor make 380 kW, about 510 hp, and it reaches 62 mph in under four seconds, per InsideEVs.
It is not built alone. The motors come from Toyota Group supplier Aisin and the 4,000 cylindrical cells from Panasonic Energy, partnerships that date to 2024, per InsideEVs. Subaru says the pack weighs 25% less than its previous battery and the platform targets a 220-pound weight cut.
Subaru would not give range, battery size or charging speed, and says the car is a verification vehicle, not the production spec, per Automotive News. Some of the technology could reach production around 2029, though Subaru has not confirmed a model or launch date, per InsideEVs.
An executive told Japan's Motor Fan, "we'll show you what the final product will look like in a few years," per Autoblog, which reads the mule as an early sign of the Performance-E STI concept. Subaru has not confirmed that.
The bet is expensive for a company Subaru's size. It sold 923,873 vehicles worldwide in 2025, under a tenth of Toyota's 11.3 million, per Automotive News, and plans to reach 1.2 million a year in the early 2030s with 10 new vehicles. Subaru also gave no sign it is ending the Toyota partnership, per InsideEVs, so the Toyota-built EVs stay on sale while the in-house ones are developed. Read Automotive News' full story.

Toyota Asks the EU to Count Japan, the U.K. and Turkey as Made in Europe: The EU's pending Industrial Accelerator Act ties EV incentives and public purchasing to EU origin, and all of Toyota's European EVs are imported from Japan except the Urban Cruiser, built in India, per Automotive News. Toyota imported 6.9 billion euros of cars from Japan in 2025, builds the Corolla wagon in England and the C-HR in Turkey, and still has no model or date for the Czech EV it announced last year. "Toyota is not a guest in Europe," Toyota Europe CEO Yoshihiro Nakata said on Oct. 15, the day France and Germany agreed to open the door for Britain to be treated as a trusted partner. Toyota wants that deal widened to Japan and Turkey. #analyst
Mexico Says Its Zero-Tariff Parts Break Is Only for the 11 Carmakers Already Building There: An Oct. 13 decree cut the import duty on assembly kits to zero from 10% for five years, and on Oct. 16 the Economy Ministry said it applies only to the 11 light-vehicle makers with plants in Mexico, per Just Auto.
