NEW METAL WINS

  • The Toyota bZ ranks fourth among U.S. EVs for the year through September, behind the Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, after its sales doubled to nearly 25,000, per Electrek. In the third quarter Toyota's EV sales rose 328% from a year earlier and Lexus's 442%, per Electrek, while Rivian's rose 46% and Subaru's 31%, per CBT News.

  • Americans bought 266,630 EVs in the third quarter, up 7.7% from the second and the most since the record third quarter of 2025, per Kelley Blue Book estimates reported by CBT News. EVs took 6.5% of new-vehicle sales, up from 5.8%, per Kelley Blue Book.

  • Against a year ago the same quarter is down 38.6%, because buyers rushed in before the $7,500 federal credit ended on Sept. 30, 2025, when EVs topped 10% of the market for the first time. Through nine months EV sales are down 30.7% while hybrid sales are up 23%, to 15.6% of the market, per Motor1.

  • Tesla's third-quarter sales fell 20% from a year earlier and it still sold more than half of all U.S. EVs, with the Model Y at 69% of its quarter, per CBT News.

  • Brands without a fresh model fell hardest. Volkswagen sold 1,421 EVs in the quarter, down 90%, including 989 ID.4s against 12,470 a year earlier, per InsideEVs. Audi's Q6 E-tron fell 94% in the quarter to 619, per Automotive News.

Cox Automotive's Stephanie Valdez Streaty called it "a market finding its footing again" and pointed to gas prices above $4 a gallon, per Kelley Blue Book. It is one quarter of sequential growth, at a share still more than a third below last fall's. The cars that grew are mostly new or refreshed: the bZ, the Rivian R2 and Subaru's Uncharted and Trailseeker.
