In today's issue:

  • Gas-only cars are now under half of new-car sales worldwide, and both reports blame fuel prices

  • BMW shows its near-production electric M3, quad motors and all

  • Stellantis idles its Cassino plant for the third time this year

THE FUEL SHOCK

  • Gasoline-only vehicles made up 49% of global new-vehicle sales in the first half of 2026, down from 52% a year earlier and 73% in 2021, per Mobility Global data (the firm formerly known as S&P Global Mobility) first reported by Nikkei, via Electrek. The count excludes hybrids, per OilPrice.

  • Gas-only sales fell 10% to 20.25 million units while the whole market shrank about 5%, with gas-car sales down 26% in China and 13% in Europe, per Electrek.

  • Battery-electric sales rose 12% to 6.87 million, a 17% share and up three points, while conventional hybrids grew 10% to 7.27 million, or 18% by Electrek's math, per Electrek. Neither report says how hybrid share moved or how it classes mild hybrids.

  • OilPrice ties the shift to the Hormuz crisis and record fuel prices, which it says pushed buyers in Europe, South America and Asia Pacific toward EVs, per OilPrice.

The 49% measures only gas-only cars, so by itself it says little about what replaces them. The reported shares leave about 16% for diesel, plug-in hybrids and minor fuels, and the cause both reports name is the price of fuel.
