ONE CAR, NOT A BRAND
GM has put on hold its plans for a Corvette SUV, codenamed V224, and a two-door electric sports car, codenamed V284, GM Authority reported Oct. 31 in an exclusive, per Autoblog. A fastback spin-off was also reportedly in the works, though GM Authority is less certain it existed.
The report gave no reason, and GM has not confirmed it. The models were initially expected between 2025 and 2026, and none has appeared.
The car Chevrolet already sells is doing well. The Corvette sold 6,585 units in the third quarter, up 28.5% from 5,123 a year earlier, per Autoblog. GM's EV sales fell 62% over the same quarter, against a year-earlier spike as buyers rushed to beat the end of the $7,500 federal tax credit, per Autoblog.
Corvette chief engineer Tony Roma told The Drive the next-generation C9 has to beat the C8 on performance without turning into a prestige-priced exotic, per Motor1. Today's range runs from the 2027 Stingray at $73,795 including destination to the ZR1X at $227,695.
The Corvette is still GM's only hybrid in the U.S., as we noted Wednesday in GM's plan to build hybrids at its three-row SUV plant: the ZR1X and the Grand Sport X, which replaced the E-Ray for 2027, per Motor1. Roma has said the nameplate will eventually go fully electric, though not soon, per Autoblog.
Ford stretched the Mustang name onto an electric crossover with the Mach-E; on this report, GM is keeping the Corvette a single sports car. GM hasn't confirmed the report or given a reason. If the report is right, the numbers support the choice: a car whose sales are rising, an engineer arguing in public for keeping it attainable, and GM EV sales down 62% from a year earlier. What the report does not settle is whether the SUV died with the electric drivetrain or is waiting for a different one, now that GM is readying its three-row SUV plant for hybrids. Exports more than doubled to 170,194, while sales in China fell 10.57% to 319,974. Volkswagen's All-Electric Zwickau Plant Has a New Job: Taking Cars Apart: The eight-stage dismantling line will start with preproduction vehicles and later take cars at the end of their life, processing 4,100 a year across two shifts from 2027 with 100 retrained workers, per InsideEVs. VW has been selling recovered original parts through dealers, independent shops and parts retailers since July, with doors, bumpers, motors and transmission components in high demand, to make repairs cheap enough to keep older cars on the road. It plans to invest up to €90 million in recycling, with €10.7 million pledged by the Saxony government, and says the business could eventually support 1,000 jobs. Zwickau has no vehicle production planned beyond 2031. #analyst
Honda Canceled Its 0 SUV, but a New U.S. Design Patent Looks Just Like It: The newly granted patent's drawings match the prototype shown at CES 2025 in the rear quarter window, the conventional door handles and the front bumper, per Autoblog. Toyota Detailed the Smaller Hybrid Engine Expected in the Next Corolla, Aiming for 15% Better Mileage: These are the engines from Monday's lead on Toyota selling its next engines to other automakers, and Toyota has now said more about them. The new family of 1.5-liter four-cylinders, designed from the start for hybrids, will come naturally aspirated and turbocharged, paired with lighter and more compact electric drive units, per Car and Driver. The naturally aspirated version replaces the 1.8-liter four that gives today's Corolla Hybrid 138 hp. Toyota is aiming for more than 15% better fuel economy from lower friction, better heat management, smaller electrical losses and a lower hood the compact hardware allows. Toyota didn't name the car, but its graphic shows a silhouette matching the Corolla concept from last year's Tokyo show, and the next Corolla, expected for the 2028 model year, is due in hybrid, plug-in and electric versions on one platform. #enthusiast

The Gallardo's Original Designer Is Rebuilding It as a €900,000 Manual: Fabrizio Giugiaro, who drew the Gallardo at Italdesign in 1998, styled the HOMMAGE 26 for CAVËN Atelier, per Autoblog. Only five parts of the donor car survive, the V-10 revs to 8,500 rpm with 540 or 560 hp through a manual, and 25 will be built from first-generation Gallardos at €900,000, about $1 million, before the cost of the donor.

Audi's Tariff Relief Would Require Starting a U.S. Plant by the End of Next Year, WSJ Reports: Following up on yesterday's report on Audi's tariff cut, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Commerce Department program expected to cover automakers that invest in U.S. production would likely give exemptions or offsets on imported vehicles or parts, but only to those that start building a factory before the end of next year, per Road & Track. The program would likely be modeled on a Commerce program for polysilicon, where companies submit plans to move production and win exemptions on certain products. Audi's Georgia plant does not start production until the early 2030s.
Magna Cut Its Sales Forecast on Weaker Production in China: The supplier now expects 2026 revenue of $41.2 billion to $42 billion, down from $41.3 billion to $42.5 billion, and estimates China will build 30.4 million vehicles this year, about 800,000 fewer than it expected, per Automotive News. Third-quarter adjusted earnings still rose 11% to $683 million on $10.1 billion in revenue, helped by recovering tariff costs from customers. Magna left its North American and European production forecasts unchanged.
