THE HYBRID GAP
GM said Oct. 27 it will prepare Lansing Delta Township Assembly, which builds the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia, for hybrid production, as part of more than $2 billion it plans to invest in the Lansing area, including $1.25 billion already announced for Lansing Grand River Assembly, per GM. GM named no models and gave no timing, saying details would come "closer to launch."
Automotive News puts the Delta Township investment at $750 million and says a previously announced $500 million federal grant meant for electric vehicles is being restructured for hybrids, per Automotive News. GM's release says the Department of Energy grant is being redirected to the plant for hybrid production.
Reuters first reported that the Traverse, Enclave and Acadia will get hybrid versions, and a person briefed on the plan confirmed it to Automotive News. GM executives had previously said its hybrids would arrive in 2027, per Automotive News.
GM's only U.S. hybrids are Corvettes, the E-Ray and the 1,250-hp ZR1X, each adding an electric motor to the front axle, per Motor Illustrated. Its U.S. sales fell 5.5% in the third quarter while Toyota's rose, narrowing GM's lead as the country's largest seller, per Automotive News, as we covered Oct. 10. CEO Mary Barra promised hybrids in multiple segments on GM's Oct. 20 earnings call, which we covered Oct. 21; this is the first plant GM has attached to that promise.
The plant built more than 291,000 vehicles in 2025, the most in its 20-year history, per GM.
GM spent years betting its fuel-efficient future on electric cars while Toyota, Honda and Hyundai sold hybrids. It has now picked the plant and, by Automotive News' and Reuters' reporting, the models; the date, GM says, comes "closer to launch." Read Automotive News' full story.

VW Will Take Its China-Developed Tech to South America, While a Report Says Its Brand Chief Wants It in Europe Too: VW said Oct. 28 that a compact platform carrying the electronic architecture its Hefei R&D center built with Chinese partners will underpin next-generation models for markets such as South America, starting by the end of the decade, and that it would ship more China-built Volkswagen and Jetta cars to South America and Africa, per Automotive News, which says VW has ruled out Europe and North America for now. A day earlier, Manager Magazin reported that VW brand chief Thomas Schäfer wants the same architecture, co-developed with Xpeng, in much of VW's European lineup, possibly in place of technology planned with Rivian, saving €4 billion to €5 billion, per Motor1.
