GM sold 670,974 vehicles in Q3, down 5.5%, and Toyota sold 633,223, up 0.6%, a gap of about 37,750, as we reported Oct. 2, per Automotive News and Toyota's release.
Toyota trails by fewer than 130,000 vehicles year to date: GM's U.S. sales are down 6.3% to 2.01 million while Toyota's are up 0.6% to 1.88 million, per Automotive News.
Electrified vehicles, hybrids and EVs together, were 57% of Toyota's Q3 sales against under 4% of GM's, per Automotive News.
Only the 2021 chip shortage has put Toyota ahead of GM; GM has been the U.S. leader every other year since passing Ford in 1931, per Automotive News.
GM's trucks are holding up, with Silverado 1500 deliveries up 13% in Q3, but it has only one hybrid, the low-volume Corvette E-Ray, per Automotive News.
Analysts told Automotive News they would be surprised if Toyota catches GM this year, but AutoPacific's Paul Waatti called 2027 "absolutely in play."

Honda Reportedly Plans a Rebadged Mitsubishi Triton: Honda reportedly plans to sell a rebadged Mitsubishi Triton, built in Thailand for Southeast Asia with a launch targeted for 2028, per Automotive News citing Japanese media, corroborated by Carscoops and Motor1. Honda declined to confirm. It would be Honda's first body-on-frame pickup in decades; the Ridgeline, its only current pickup, is unibody. #news

FTC Drops Asbury Case but Proposes a Dealer Pricing Settlement With Greenway: The FTC dismissed its complaint against Asbury Automotive Group on Oct. 5, per CBT News, but proposed a settlement with Greenway Automotive, alleging that more than 92% of Greenway Kia customers were charged an average of $3,354 above advertised prices, per Automotive News. Reuters: Tesla Leaned on the Dutch Regulator to Ease Its FSD Review: Tesla spent months pushing the Dutch regulator RDW to scale back its review of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), including disputing a €365,000 bill, according to emails obtained by Reuters, per Electrek. The bill itemized testing permits, technical work and other services, and a Tesla employee balked at it in an April 2025 email, per Automotive News Europe. Porsche's Nine-Month Deliveries Fall 16% on Weak China Demand: Porsche delivered 178,532 cars worldwide in the first nine months of 2026, down from 212,509 a year earlier, a 16.0% decline, per Reuters and Porsche's release.
