NISSAN'S LATE HYBRID
The RAV4, the nation's best-selling SUV and sold only as a hybrid, per KBB, is scarce right now: David Christ, general manager of the Toyota Division at Toyota Motor North America, said the RAV4 had just a two-day supply at the end of August and is down to single-digit days, per CBT News, and KBB says a temporary RAV4 shortage at Toyota dealers helped flip the compact-versus-midsize SUV ranking in August.
Nissan's hybrid Rogue lands in that gap. The Rogue, its workhorse at about 4 million US sales over two decades, saw its share of the compact-crossover segment sink to 7.6% last year, the lowest since 2009, per Automotive News, which ties the slump largely to having no hybrid. One in three compact crossovers sold in the second quarter was a hybrid, per Edmunds via Automotive News.
Nissan says the 2027 Rogue Hybrid goes on sale this fall in a single trim, the SR with the SR Technology package, at $43,065 including $1,575 destination, per Car and Driver and Nissan. The $37,065 base SV and the $45,065 Platinum follow in early 2027, per Automotive News, which reports supply ramping to about 6,000 units by March as the other two trims enter production. It replaces the Rogue Plug-In Hybrid, a badge-engineered Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV that Nissan is discontinuing, per AutoGuide.
It is a series hybrid: a 148-hp three-cylinder engine only generates electricity, and two motors make 225 hp combined with standard all-wheel drive, per The Drive. Nissan estimates 38 mpg combined.
The Drive notes it costs more and is less efficient on paper than the base Toyota RAV4, which InsideEVs lists from $33,495.
Autoblog drove a pre-production Rogue Hybrid back-to-back with a 2026 RAV4 Hybrid Limited and found the Nissan pulled away more smoothly and quietly and felt more substantial, though the RAV4 felt lighter.
Nissan gets its shot while the RAV4 is hard to find, but it can only offer one $43,065 trim this fall and about 6,000 units by March.

That is July against July 2025, a different measure from the Cox month-over-month sales behind our Sept. 20 note that EV sales rose in August. It is the 10th straight month of decline since the federal tax credit expired Sept. 30, and automakers are shifting back toward combustion engines while accelerating hybrids. #market

Porsche Is Reportedly Building a Flat-Eight Supercar Called the S1: German business paper Handelsblatt reports Porsche is developing a supercar known internally as the S1, priced around €500,000 (about $574,000) and possibly powered by a flat-eight, per Motor1. Porsche has never put a flat-eight in a production car, per The Drive, and Motor1 says the company may preview the S1 to investors at its Oct. 7 Capital Markets Day, which our VW margin-forecast story named as the next test for Porsche. Its last supercar, the 918 Spyder, ended production in June 2015.

Stellantis Recalls 97,349 Wagoneers Over Roof Crossbars That Can Detach: Under-tightened pivot bolts can let a roof crossbar come off at speed, per Carscoops, citing NHTSA filings. The recall covers the 2022-2025 Wagoneer, 2022-2026 Grand Wagoneer, 2023-2025 Wagoneer L and 2023-2026 Grand Wagoneer L, plus 3,038 Mopar rack kits. Stellantis knew of 15 potentially related warranty claims as of Aug. 31, none involving a crash or injury. → If you own one: Watch for a rattle, a missing bolt or a crossbar separating at its pivot.
